Velaa Private Island, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi and Soneva resorts in the Maldives have paid over MVR 50,000 as service charge to each employee this month.
Statistics published on the resort workers’ Facebook page show that Velaa paid the highest service charge this month. This amounts to USD 3,660 (MVR 56,437) per employee. The resort is one of the top-ranked resorts on the service charge list every month.
Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, which is second on the list, paid USD 3,320 (MVR 51,194) to each employee, while Soneva resorts paid USD 3,253.64 (MVR 50,171) to each employee.
As tourist arrivals to the Maldives increase every year during the peak season, many resorts pay a large amount of service charge.
Service charge information is made public based on information provided by resort employees. Some resorts have not revealed the number of service charges distributed this month.
