JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa Awarded Green Globe Certification for Sustainability Initiatives

JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa has announced its inaugural Green Globe certification, a recognition of its ongoing commitment to sustainable luxury. Nestled in the heart of Shaviyani Atoll where the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean meet pristine white sands—the resort exemplifies a new era of hospitality that blends indulgence with environmental responsibility.

In an age defined by conscious travel, the resort champions eco-conscious practices designed to preserve the fragile ecosystem of the Maldives. At the forefront of these efforts is its in-house water bottling plant, powered by the EcoPure Waters purification system. By bottling fresh water onsite in reusable glass bottles, the resort has eliminated the use of single-use plastic bottles, reducing plastic waste by over 100,000 bottles annually and protecting local marine life.

The resort’s sustainability journey extends to its culinary offerings. Guests can participate in immersive programs such as the JW Garden to Table cooking class, where more than 40 varieties of fruits, herbs, and vegetables are grown organically in the 3,600-square-foot JW Garden. Participants harvest ingredients alongside chefs before preparing a four-course meal that reflects Maldivian flavors.

Complementing this is the JW Garden to Glass cocktail-making experience at Horizon Bar, where guests craft artisanal cocktails with botanicals and garnishes sourced directly from the garden.

Beyond guest experiences, JW Marriott Maldives is deeply committed to responsible sourcing. All animal proteins are procured as whole or minimally processed products, with a pledge to use only cage-free eggs by 2025. Seafood is carefully selected to ensure it is either wild-caught or responsibly farmed. By 2025, at least 50% of all produce will be sourced locally, supporting Maldivian farmers while reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

Ethical sourcing also extends to beverages, with coffee, tea, cocoa, and sugar all traceable and fair trade certified. Across guest amenities, biodegradable materials and refillable containers are prioritized, while textiles, linens, and uniforms are made from sustainable materials.

These initiatives are guided by Marriott International’s Serve 360 framework, reinforcing the company’s mission to make a positive impact on communities and the planet. As the hospitality industry confronts climate change and evolving guest expectations, JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa demonstrates that sustainability and luxury not only coexist but thrive together.
