Greater Bay Airlines Launches Direct Route Connecting Hong Kong and the Maldives

Greater Bay Airlines has launched direct flights connecting Hong Kong and the Maldives, expanding the country’s international air network and strengthening connectivity with East Asia. The airline’s inaugural flight arrived at Velana International Airport, where passengers received a special welcome.

The carrier will operate daily services using a Boeing 737-800 until 25 February, offering a convenient direct option for travellers from Hong Kong. This new route strengthens travel links at a time when airlines are restoring and diversifying connections, providing travellers with more direct options to promote the Maldives to the Hong Kong market.

The launch aligns with a steady rise in arrivals from China, which has once again secured its position as the Maldives’ leading source market. As of 8 February 2026, over 37,304 Chinese tourists have arrived in the country, accounting for 12.6% of total tourist arrivals. This follows a strong performance in 2025, when the Maldives welcomed 329,110 visitors from China, making it the country’s top market for the year. The growth in arrivals highlights the increasing demand from Chinese travellers and emphasises the importance of this enhanced connectivity.

Greater Bay Airlines is currently the only airline operating direct flights between Hong Kong and the Maldives, making this route a significant addition to the Maldives’ aviation landscape and providing a valuable opportunity to attract travellers from East Asia.
