From Reef to Roof: Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives Achieves 7th Consecutive Green Globe Certification

Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives has been  awarded its 7th consecutive Green Globe Certification, achieving Gold Member status for the  third time and reaffirming its commitment to sustainable island living. 

Built around the philosophy of “From Reef to Roof,” the resort’s approach connects marine  conservation with operational responsibility, ensuring that both the natural environment and  guest experience are protected for the long term. 

At the heart of this commitment is the resort’s house reef, a thriving ecosystem home to  corals, turtles, and diverse marine life. Ongoing conservation efforts, led by a Resident  Marine Biologist, include coral restoration, reef clean-ups, and guided snorkelling  experiences that invite guests to engage more meaningfully with the underwater environment.  

Beyond the reef, sustainability is embedded across all aspects of the resort’s operations.  Renewable energy initiatives, including solar power, help reduce reliance on diesel, while an  on-site desalination system and water bottling plant enable full water self-sufficiency and the  elimination of single-use plastic bottles.  

Energy consumption is carefully managed through the integration of renewable sources,  including a solar power installation that reduces reliance on diesel-generated electricity. At  the same time, water independence is achieved through an on-site desalination system, which  converts seawater into fresh drinking water for the island.  

This is complemented by the resort’s own water bottling plant, which has enabled the complete removal of single-use plastic water bottles since 2020—an important milestone in  reducing waste across the island.  

Waste management is approached with equal care, with systems in place to reduce, reuse, and  recycle materials wherever possible, alongside composting initiatives that minimise food  waste and support more sustainable operations.

As with all Maldivian island resorts, Grand Park Kodhipparu operates independently of  mainland infrastructure, generating its own energy and water while managing all waste on site. This self-sufficient model not only reduces environmental impact but also ensures a  high level of operational resilience—an increasingly important consideration for travellers  today. 

While Green Globe Certification provides international recognition of sustainability  performance, for Grand Park Kodhipparu it represents an ongoing journey rather than a fixed  achievement. Sustainability is embedded into daily operations, guest experiences, and long term strategy—continually evolving to meet both environmental needs and guest  expectations.
