Diamonds Thudufushi and Qatar Airways Holidays Celebrate Festive Season with Coral Replanting Activity

After an eventful 2020, which better way to close off the year than with an environmental protection activity in collaboration with Qatar Airways Holidays and Planhotel Group’s Diamonds Thudufushi?

The Maldives is a unique and extremely charming place, in particular because of one of the protagonists of its ocean, the coral. Its vital importance to the reef’s life is the reason why Diamonds Thudufushi decided to promote its “Coral Conservation Project”.

The Planhotel Group promotes the scientific research on the Resorts of Athuruga and Thudufushi in order to improve the knowledge of the marine ecosystem to create a sensitive net for the protection of the Maldivian reefs.

This Project is in partnership with the University of Milano-Bicocca, an internationally recognized scientific institution which has ben present in Maldives sine 2009 when the Marine Research and Higher Education Center (MaRHE) was established in Magoodhoo (Faafu Atoll) to improve the field work on the Tropical Ecosystem.

The various projects range from the ecology of Acanthaster planci (Crown-of-Thorns starfish), Coral Restoration, Monitoring of the reef status with the support of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and many more.

Their project’s main objective is to preserve the coral reefs and to create and encourage a responsible kind of tourism. Thanks to this project, which has begun in May 2015, each guest has the opportunity to adopt a frame (iron structure covered with sand) which, in addition to the coral, will also have a label with its name on it.

Back home, the guest will receive via e-mail photographs and information about the frame that they have sponsored every 3 months. The purchase of the frame is $150 USD and will give a real help to the nature of the place, in a unique way.

Mr. Morton Loej, the Senior Vice President of Corporate Planning at Qatar Airways recently visited with his family and took part of this wonderful activity. Our team guided and educated them on the project, whilst planting a frame in honour of their visit and another for Qatar Airways to celebrate the re-opening of our resort thanks to their Travel Bubble, which has been a great restart of travel after the major impact of COVID-19.
