Velana International Airport’s long-awaited new terminal began operations yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the Maldives’ tourism and aviation development. The first service at the new facility featured the national carrier Maldivian’s A330 wide-body aircraft, arriving from Cochin in the afternoon.
Passengers on the inaugural flight were welcomed at the terminal with warm hospitality, as the airline’s cabin crew appeared in traditional Maldivian attire—offering travellers a taste of the local culture from the moment they arrived.
All international flights by Maldivian will now operate from the new terminal, with other airlines expected to gradually transition over the coming weeks. Full integration is targeted for September, streamlining the arrival experience for international tourists and connecting travellers.
Developed over a nine-year period with major infrastructure upgrades, the new terminal allows Velana International Airport to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually—supporting the country’s increasing visitor numbers and strengthening its position as a leading global travel destination.
The operational rollout marks a new era for the Maldives’ primary international gateway, promising smoother arrivals, increased capacity, and an elevated first impression for guests arriving in paradise.
