Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, the first international luxury hotel chain to arrive in the Maldives, has celebrated its 30th Anniversary on 24 September 2025 under the theme “The Legacy Continues.” The celebration paid tribute to three decades of barefoot eco-luxury, sustainability, and heartfelt hospitality — values that remain at the core of Banyan Tree’s philosophy of a Sanctuary for the Senses.

The 30th Anniversary evening was a vibrant showcase of Maldivian cultural heritage. Guests explored a Walk of Legacy photo exhibition reflecting the resort’s journey since the Grand Opening on 23 September 1995, before immersing in traditional artistry at the local corner Vabbin Fannu — including traditional Thundu Kunaa reed weaving, Liye Laajehun lacquerware, Kasabu Viyun embroidery, and the proud traditions of local fishing heritage. The evening also featured a Styrofoam workshop by local resident artist, transforming discarded materials into meaningful art, alongside the captivating soulful rhythms of Bodu Beru and cultural dances that brought the island’s stories to life.
In a defining moment, Banyan Tree’s founders and honoured guests came together to unveil the fire signage rising from the ocean — “The Legacy Continues.” It was a proud declaration that the spirit of sustainability, wellbeing, and community will be carried forward with renewed strength, and preserved for generations to come.

Since opening its doors in 1995, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has embodied the Original Maldives spirit. Long before sustainability became a global focus, Banyan Tree pioneered regenerative practices in the Maldives — from introducing the country’s first resort-based marine lab in 2004 to championing coral restoration and environmental education.
The resort was also the first to introduce spa experiences to the Maldives in 1995, setting a new benchmark for luxury hospitality. Today, at Banyan Tree Spa & Wellbeing, our holistic practices of hundred-year Asian healing wisdom continue to honour the sacred bonds between self and nature.
More than a destination, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru is a barefoot sanctuary for the senses rooted in sustainability and local heritage – a place where nature, culture, and a sense of belonging craft an unforgettable journey.

The 30th anniversary marks a defining chapter in Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru’s legacy — a year of meaningful celebrations introducing wellbeing and sustainability initiatives, local community empowerment and recognition by prestigious awards.
Through this groundbreaking partnership, Banyan Tree Maldives and MNU are setting a regional precedent for sustainable, mutually beneficial collaborations between the private sector and academia, demonstrating how eco-tourism can directly contribute to the advancement of science, education, and conservation in the Maldives.

Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Group, added:
“When we opened Vabbinfaru in 1995, our vision was to create a sanctuary where people could rediscover their bond with nature, their loved ones, and themselves. That vision, grounded in sustainability, wellbeing, and the empowerment of people, continues to guide us today. It is a legacy we are devoted to safeguarding and passing on to the generations that will follow.”
Mr Elias Pertoft, General Manager of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, shared “For 30 years, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has stayed true to the Original Maldives spirit — a barefoot sanctuary of heartfelt hospitality. As we enter the fourth decade, we remain pioneering regenerative tourism in the Maldives. From safeguarding marine conservation and associate welfare to unveiling new dimensions of well-being and cultural heritage, the resort continues to invite travellers to rediscover the Maldives as it was meant to be experienced — authentic, idyllic, and in harmony with nature.”
As part of its vision, early this year, the resort unveiled refreshed villas and three signature dining destinations — Saffron, the award-winning Thai restaurant; Sangu Garden, an outdoor barbecue experience offering sustainable dining with fresh, locally sourced ingredients; and Madi Hiyaa, the award-winning overwater Japanese restaurant. Together with its sustainably designed villas, the island embodies Banyan Tree’s ethos of preserving the authenticity, and harmony with nature.
This anniversary invites you to rediscover these experiences and be part of Banyan Tree’s global celebration. Celebrate with us — explore the world through 100 Journeys offer, and more.
