After 14 years of dedicated service to Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, Mr Hussain Shahid has been promoted to the esteemed position of Resort Manager. Shahid’s journey began in 2009 when he joined the resort as the Director of Human Resources. Over the years, he has honed his skills in hotel management, progressing from the role of Executive Assistant Manager to his current position as Resort Manager.
Reflecting on his time at Kandooma, Shahid fondly recalls the sense of belonging he felt since the day he joined. Interestingly, hotels were not initially in his career plans. Growing up in the Maldives, he aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a government role. Shahid’s desire to don a tie and look smart led him to serve in a government position for a few years. However, his path took an unexpected turn when he formed a music group with friends after secondary school, which introduced him to the world of resorts and entertainment.
The experience of entertaining guests at resorts brought Shahid immense joy, although he hadn’t realized at the time that it would shape his future career. When he married and started a family, Shahid realized that his government salary wasn’t sufficient to meet his family’s needs. Seeking better opportunities, he made the decision to join the hospitality industry, enticed by the higher pay and leveraging his professional experience to secure a managerial position.
For Shahid, the ultimate satisfaction in his role comes from helping guests achieve their “once in a lifetime” dreams. Whether it’s assisting guests in fulfilling their bucket list goals or witnessing their dreams come true, Shahid finds fulfillment in being a part of those experiences. His dedication extends to his team as well, as he takes great pride in shaping and assisting his team members to develop their careers within the industry, deriving inner satisfaction from their success and achievements.
When it comes to leadership qualities, Shahid emphasizes the importance of patience. He believes that patience, along with respect, humility, calmness, active listening, and resilience, are core traits of a good leader, which he strives to embody. Shahid sees his promotion to Resort Manager as a significant step toward his ultimate career goal. With increased responsibilities and a focus on the culinary division, he envisions a more accessible role in problem-solving, guiding operational aspects, and playing a key role in the overall management of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives.
As a role model for aspiring professionals in the Maldives, Shahid offers valuable advice to young individuals looking to join the industry. He stresses the importance of acquiring the right education and experience, suggesting completing high school education, pursuing a diploma in hospitality, gaining a few years of experience in a branded resort (either local or international), and then considering a university degree or an MBA to climb the management ladder. Shahid also highlights the significance of gaining international experience.
Finally, Shahid sets his sights on achieving his goal of managing large-scale resort operations while being known as a great operational leader. He is confident that, one step at a time, he will reach this milestone in the not-too-distant future.
