Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal has announced the government’s plans to take control of Bodufinolhu island in Laamu Atoll for tourism development. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Gan, Laamu Atoll.
Minister Faisal highlighted that Bodufinolhu has remained underutilised since it was initially allocated to a private entity for a training resort in 2008. The government’s decision to intervene aims to rectify this situation.
The Minister confirmed that the development of Bodufinolhu would be closely aligned with the Maldives’ Tourism Master Plan. He further referenced the Asseyri Tourism Development Plan, which seeks to add 700 new beds in Laamu Atoll to expand tourism infrastructure and increase the destination’s global recognition.
As part of the development strategy, Minister Faisal revealed plans for four new resorts operating under a one-island concept. The government will engage potential investors at forthcoming investment forums.
Acknowledging challenges posed by limited air transport, the Minister underlined the importance of a new international airport planned for the region to support tourism growth. He also stated that the government is working to find solutions to high airfares, ensuring tourists have better access to the Maldives.
