The Maldives aims to welcome 2.2 million tourists next year, according to state budget figures released by the Ministry of Finance. This ambitious target aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism, which remains the lifeline of the nation’s economy. For 2024, the goal remains set at 2 million tourist arrivals, indicating a steady push towards increasing visitor numbers.
The state budget anticipates a total of 2.2 million tourist arrivals, alongside 14.2 million bed-nights for next year. To achieve this, the government is focused on the completion and operational launch of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), a crucial component of its broader tourism infrastructure development strategy.
The current international terminal at VIA is designed to handle 1.5 million passengers annually. In contrast, the upcoming terminal, spanning 78,000 square metres and equipped with modern amenities, will be able to accommodate up to 7 million passengers per year. This significant upgrade is expected to enhance the Maldives’ capacity to welcome a larger influx of tourists, easing the congestion experienced at the existing terminal.
The new terminal is set to feature advanced facilities, including aero boarding bridges, a sophisticated baggage handling system, and a wide range of retail, dining, and lounge services. These enhancements are intended to elevate the overall passenger experience and support the government’s efforts to attract more tourists.
To reach the 2.2 million target for 2025, the Maldives would need to welcome an average of around 6,028 tourists per day throughout the year. Here’s the breakdown:
Given the current infrastructure and the anticipated expansion with the new terminal, this target seems achievable, especially during the high season when daily arrivals often exceed this figure. However, maintaining such numbers consistently throughout the year will require robust marketing efforts, strategic partnerships with airlines, and ensuring that the Maldives remains a competitive destination in the global market.
The government’s confidence in meeting its ambitious targets is supported by its ongoing investments in infrastructure and improvements at VIA. By enhancing capacity and ensuring a seamless travel experience, the Maldives aims to solidify its position as one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations.
With the new terminal set to open soon, there is hope that this enhanced facility will contribute to the Maldives’ ability to sustain high tourist arrivals and ultimately achieve its goal of 2.2 million visitors in 2025.
