Velana International Airport has officially opened its brand-new international terminal, ushering in a transformative chapter for travel and tourism in the Maldives. Currently the country’s largest aviation hub, it is designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually, marking a major leap in the Maldives’ capacity to welcome global travellers with ease.
As the primary international gateway to the Maldives, this new terminal plays a crucial role in shaping the visitor experience. With its expanded capacity and modern amenities, the upgrade is expected to streamline connectivity, ease congestion, and support smoother resort transfers across the Maldives. The terminal sets the tone for a more comfortable and efficient arrival experience, offering travellers a smoother start to their Maldivian journey.
Adding to the original terminal in use since 1981, the new structure combines modern functionality with cultural expression. Inspired by Maldivian seascapes and historic architectural elements, the design features wave-shaped ceilings and traditional hirigaa carvings, paying homage to the nation’s natural beauty and heritage.
Travellers can now expect an elevated level of service and efficiency at every stage of their journey. The terminal boasts:

Travellers will find a selection of duty-free outlets, retail stores, and dining options designed to add comfort and convenience to their journey.
To commemorate the occasion, a large-scale drone show was held in Hulhulé, followed by a six-minute fireworks display across 16 locations around the Malé region. The event reflected the magnitude of this development—not just for aviation, but for the Maldives’ identity as a global travel destination.
