In a press conference given on 10th July, the Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed stated that over 70 islands have been leased for resort development.
Minister highlighted that most of the islands have been leased from 2006 onward and we can see the effect it has had on the economy and community of Maldives. The Government plans on conducting a thorough survey and to identify the plausible reasons behind it.
Further to this, 30 islands from the 70 has been identified and a list has been shared with the Ministry of Economic Development to develop into resorts within the next 3 years.
According to statistics of the Tourism Ministry, there are over 132 tourism-related ongoing projects while over 140 resorts are being developed.
