Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa Reintroduces Traditional Dhoni, A Timeless Symbol of Island Heritage
Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa has announced the restoration and reintroduction of its historic dhoni, Sirru Handhu (Dhivehi for “Moon Whisper”), celebrating the rich heritage and seafaring traditions of the Maldives. The iconic vessel was officially unveiled on February 9, 2026 during a special ceremony on the resort’s shores.
Since 1973, Sirru Handhu has quietly existed as part of the island’s living narrative, bearing witness to decades of welcomes, farewells, celebrations, and tranquil island days. Generations of guests have passed by its graceful silhouette, familiar yet often unnoticed, its aged timber holding memories shaped by time and tide.
A thoughtful and careful restoration has now brought the vessel back into focus, preserving its craftsmanship while honoring the spirit and history it embodies. Its ceremonial return marked a meaningful moment for the island community, reintroducing this living symbol of heritage with renewed purpose.
The celebration began with the rhythmic heartbeat of Boduberu, the Maldives’ traditional drumming, echoing through the island pathways. Dancers and drummers led a vibrant cultural parade, guiding guests toward the resort’s pavilion where Sirru Handhu now takes its place of pride.
In a moving tribute to tradition, the associates manually pulled the dhoni across the island, honoring the customary way such vessels were once brought ashore. Guests, inspired by the authenticity of the moment, joined in the effort, transforming the ceremony into a shared experience of culture, connection, and celebration.
As the dhoni settled into its permanent home within the pavilion, a short storytelling session recounted its journey through time and its place in the resort’s history. The celebration continued in true Maldivian spirit with local delicacies refreshing island juices, and freshly opened coconuts shared among guests and associates, as laughter and conversation filled the air.
Through this restoration, Sheraton Maldives has revived a treasured artefact while deepening its connection to Maldivian heritage and community. Now taking pride of place in the resort’s arrival area, Sirru Handhu welcomes visitors as both a symbol of the past and a guardian of the stories yet to unfold.
“Sirru Handhu represents the enduring connection between our resort and the heritage of the Maldives,” said Greg Allan, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa. “Its preservation honors these traditions while inviting guests to become part of an evolving story from the moment they arrive. It reflects our belief that meaningful hospitality begins with genuine respect for place, culture, and community.”
