At the TTM Travel Summit 2021 on Sunday, Mr. Mohamed Raaidh, the Managing Director of MITDC, spoke on tourism diversification in the Maldives.
Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITDC) is a 100% Maldivian state-owned enterprise, mandated with the development of integrated tourism, majorly in local inhabited islands in the Maldives.
“With the one island one resort concept of the Maldivian resorts, there is limited opportunity to interact,” Mr. Raaidh stated. “Visitors have not got the chance to experience the authentic Maldivian way of life. Parts of the tourism industry in Maldives had been operating in a somewhat separate, parallel universe.”
He emphasized the work that MITDC is undertaking to incorporate heritage, culture and sail segments in community-based tourism in the Maldives.
“To engage local communities, we encourage the display of cultural practices with more frequent visits to local islands,” he noted. “Unique cultural aspects can be incorporated, such as Maldivian traditional style weddings. This allows opportunities for locals to visit resorts and display unique Maldivian crafts.”
TTM Travel Summit 2021 was held as the opening event of TTM Maldives 2021, the largest and leading travel fair in the Maldives.
