HighlightsCanareef Resort Maldives is located in Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll in the Maldives, just south of the equator. The island runs 4.5 km end to end across 42 hectares, one of the longest beaches in the country, with 271 villas in three categories: Sunrise Villa, Sunset Beach Villa and Premium Beach Villa with Whirlpool. Two buffet restaurants, four bars, three pools and a dedicated kids' pool, and Dhunfini Spa beside Kalhibih Lake. Addu Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with more than 1,200 recorded species. There are 27 dive sites nearby, including the 140m British Loyalty, sunk in 1944 and the largest shipwreck in the Maldives. Mantas, turtles, tiger sharks, eagle rays and Napoleon wrasse are seen year round. Five natural lakes and mangroves run through the island, and Canareef is the only resort in the Maldives with direct bridge access to a local island. Guests reach the resort via domestic flight from Velana International Airport to Gan International Airport and a 10-minute speedboat, with direct connections from Colombo twice weekly.
Unique ToGuests crossing the equator on the domestic flight to Gan receive an Equator Crossing Certificate. Arrival is met with Boduberu drumming and handmade coconut palm leaf garlands. A bridge connects Canareef to Hulhumeedhoo, so guests can walk into a working local island rather than book a boat to one. On Hulhumeedhoo is Koagannu, the oldest and largest Muslim cemetery in the Maldives. Nearby Gan was a British RAF station during the Second World War and still holds its war memorial, and two protected areas, Addu Nature Park and Mathikilhi Eco Park, are within reach on the Addu City tour. At Dhunfini Spa, the Warm Sand Massage draws on a Maldivian healing practice used for muscular and joint pain, and the Canareef Facial is made with natural ingredients and a mineral-rich mud mask. The signature Dhunfini Araamu closes with singing bowls. Yoga runs privately or in small groups in the studio, the open-air shala or on the beach. Private dining is set in four ways: Jazeera on the sand, Faalan on an over-water platform, and Under the Stars in the open air. Excursions include sunrise and big game fishing, dolphin cruises, and a sunset cocktail cruise on a traditional dhoni.
