Maldives to Raise Tourism Taxes: TGST Set for 17% and Green Tax Doubled to $12

The Maldives government plans to introduce an amendment on Monday to raise the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) for tourists to 17% and to double the green tax from $6 to $12 per person per night.

The proposed changes include a TGST increase expected to be implemented in June 2025, while the green tax increase will commence in January 2025.

According to the proposed changes, guesthouses and tourism providers with less than 50 rooms will impose a green tax of $6 per person per night instead of $3, while the resorts will charge $12 per person per night, an increase from $6. The government also aims to eliminate the green tax for children under the age of two, who are currently subject to this tax.

By implementing these changes, the government aims to take advantage of the expanding tourism sector and generate additional revenue for economic growth. This follows the earlier rise of the TGST from 12% to 16% in January 2023.
