Cluster Director of Sales at CROSSROADS Maldives

Haydee Cruz

Haydee Cruz serves as Cluster Director of Sales at CROSSROADS Maldives, bringing a wealth of international hospitality experience across the Caribbean, South America, the USA, Thailand, and the Maldives. Her journey has been guided by a passion for travel and cultural exchange, along with a strong focus on commercial strategy within luxury and lifestyle hospitality brands. Over the years, she has developed expertise in understanding diverse source markets and shaping guest-centric positioning for integrated resort experiences.

In her current role at CROSSROADS Maldives, she leads the commercial strategy for a unique multi-island destination that combines SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and The Marina @ CROSSROADS. Her focus is on strengthening brand differentiation while driving synergy across the portfolio, positioning the destination as a lifestyle-led hub for modern travellers seeking immersive, experience-rich stays in the Maldives.

Having built an extensive international career in hospitality and resort sales, could you take us through the journey that eventually led you to CROSSROADS Maldives as Cluster Director of Sales?

My journey in hospitality has been shaped by a passion for travel, cultural connection, and the ability to create meaningful guest experiences through strategic commercial leadership. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work across multiple international markets in the Caribbean, South America, the USA, Thailand and the Maldives, collaborating with diverse teams and global travel partners within lifestyle and luxury resorts, international hospitality brands, and integrated destinations.

What attracted me to CROSSROADS Maldives was the uniqueness of the destination itself. Unlike traditional standalone resorts in the Maldives, CROSSROADS Maldives represents an entirely different concept, a fully integrated, multi-island lifestyle destination that combines hospitality, entertainment, dining, retail, and leisure experiences within one ecosystem.

For someone with a strong background in sales and marketing, the opportunity was incredibly exciting. It allowed me to apply my international experience while helping shape the commercial identity of a destination that continues to redefine the Maldivian hospitality landscape.

The role also appealed to me because it requires balancing multiple brands with distinct personalities. At CROSSROADS Maldives, we are not simply selling rooms or villas; we are selling experiences tailored to different traveller profiles. That dynamic environment continuously challenges us to innovate, adapt, and remain highly connected to global travel trends.

Throughout my career, I have learned that hospitality is ultimately about people, understanding guests, building trust with partners, and creating long-term relationships across markets. Those principles continue to guide me today in my role as Cluster Director of Sales.

As part of CROSSROADS Maldives, SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton offers a distinct lifestyle-driven experience. How do you position SAii Lagoon Maldives to stand out in the market while complementing the broader identity of CROSSROADS Maldives?

SAii Lagoon Maldives has a distinctive identity within the Maldives market, offering a relaxed, nature-focused, and experience-driven escape that feels vibrant, approachable, and authentic. Unlike traditional ultra-luxury resorts, SAii Lagoon Maldives emphasises emotional connection, discovery, and meaningful lifestyle experiences through its natural surroundings, family-friendly atmosphere, diverse dining, wellness offerings, and direct access to The Marina @ CROSSROADS. Its convenient location, just a short speedboat ride from Velana International Airport, further enhances its appeal to modern travellers seeking a Maldives experience that is immersive, social, and connected to nature while remaining aligned with the broader vision of CROSSROADS Maldives as a multi-island lifestyle destination.

We position SAii Lagoon Maldives as a resort that appeals to modern travellers who value experiences, energy, and emotional connection. It is especially attractive for couples, families, groups of friends, and younger lifestyle travellers who want a Maldives holiday that feels less formal and more immersive.

The resort’s playful and approachable personality feels intentionally different from many traditional resorts in the destination. How does that brand character influence the way SAii Lagoon Maldives is marketed globally?

SAii Lagoon Maldives is intentionally designed to feel fresh, uplifting, and experience-driven, with a strong connection to its natural surroundings. This means our communication style must consistently reflect that spirit. Our marketing focuses heavily on storytelling and lifestyle imagery rather than traditional lifestyle messaging. Instead of emphasising exclusivity or opulence alone, we showcase meaningful moments and authentic experiences: families enjoying the beach together, couples discovering the natural beauty of the island, guests cycling through the resort, wellness experiences by the ocean, sunset gatherings, marine encounters, and relaxed dining moments surrounded by nature.

The tone of our campaigns is warm, approachable, and human. We want travellers to feel emotionally connected to the resort before they even arrive. Authenticity is extremely important in today’s travel landscape, particularly among younger audiences and modern travellers who seek brands with personality, relatability, and genuine experiences.

Digital marketing and social media play a critical role in communicating the spirit of SAii Lagoon Maldives in real time. Video content, influencer collaborations, experiential storytelling, and user-generated content are highly effective in showcasing the resort’s relaxed lifestyle, natural environment, and sense of discovery.

Another important factor is the increasing demand for multi-generational and experience-driven holidays. SAii Lagoon Maldives offers an environment where guests can enjoy lifestyle experiences in a way that feels comfortable, social, and connected to nature.

This balance is a major differentiator within the Maldives market and clearly distinguishes the resort from the entertainment-driven positioning of Hard Rock Hotel Maldives.

What source markets are currently performing strongest for SAii Lagoon Maldives, and where do you see the greatest potential for future growth?

SAii Lagoon Maldives continues to perform strongly across a diversified mix of international markets. Traditionally, Europe remains an important contributor, particularly from countries with a strong affinity for long-haul leisure travel and lifestyle hospitality experiences.

Asia is also becoming increasingly important, especially in markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and selected East Asian countries. India, in particular, has shown remarkable growth over recent years due to improved air connectivity, shorter travel times, rising disposable income, and growing interest in the Maldives as both a luxury and experiential destination.

The Middle East has historically been another valuable market segment, particularly for family travel and premium leisure experiences. However, like many destinations globally, market dynamics continue to evolve depending on economic conditions, airline connectivity, and geopolitical developments.

In addition to leisure travel, we are also seeing increasing opportunities within the MICE and wedding segments. CROSSROADS Maldives offers a unique advantage for meetings, incentives, conferences, events, destination weddings, and celebratory occasions because of its integrated destination concept, diverse accommodation offerings, entertainment options, and accessibility from Velana International Airport. Today’s travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that combine memorable experiences with convenience, personalisation, and lifestyle-driven offerings.

For weddings and celebrations in particular, SAii Lagoon Maldives provides a vibrant yet intimate setting that appeals to couples seeking a more relaxed and experiential alternative to traditional luxury resorts. The ability to combine beachfront ceremonies, group accommodations, dining experiences, entertainment, and marina activities within one destination creates strong appeal for both intimate weddings and larger group celebrations.

Your role involves positioning SAii Lagoon Maldives, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, and The Marina @ CROSSROADS while driving overall destination growth. How has your career journey shaped your approach to managing such a diverse commercial portfolio?

Managing a diverse commercial portfolio requires adaptability, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of brand identity. My international career has exposed me to a wide variety of hospitality models, market dynamics, and consumer behaviours, which have helped shape a more holistic commercial approach.

One of the key lessons I have learned is that every brand must maintain its own authentic voice while still contributing to the larger destination story. At CROSSROADS Maldives, each component has a distinct identity. SAii Lagoon Maldives focuses on lifestyle-driven experiences, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives brings an energetic music-inspired hospitality concept, and The Marina serves as the social and entertainment hub of the destination.

Our role is to ensure these brands complement rather than compete with one another. That requires close alignment between sales, marketing, revenue management, partnerships, public relations, and digital strategy.

My previous experiences working across different countries and cultures also taught me the importance of flexibility and local market understanding. What resonates with travellers in Europe may differ significantly from what resonates with travellers in Asia or the Middle East. Successful commercial leadership requires balancing global brand consistency with market-specific strategies.

Another important aspect is collaboration. Hospitality today is highly interconnected, and success often depends on strong partnerships, whether with travel advisors, tour operators, airlines, media, or online platforms. Building trust-based relationships remains one of the most important elements of sustainable commercial growth.

Ultimately, managing such a diverse portfolio is about creating synergy while allowing each brand to maintain its individuality.

Throughout your career, you have worked with diverse teams, markets, and travel partners. What do you believe are the key qualities needed to succeed in hospitality sales and marketing at an international level?

Hospitality is one of the most dynamic and people-driven industries in the world, and succeeding internationally requires a combination of professional expertise and personal adaptability.

First and foremost, relationship-building skills are essential. Hospitality sales and marketing are fundamentally about trust, communication, and long-term partnerships. Strong relationships with travel partners, clients, media, and internal teams create the foundation for long-term success.

Cultural intelligence is equally important. Working internationally means understanding different communication styles, consumer behaviours, business expectations, and market sensitivities. Being open-minded and adaptable allows professionals to navigate diverse environments more effectively.

Resilience is another critical quality. The hospitality industry is constantly evolving, influenced by economic changes, global events, consumer trends, and technological shifts. Successful leaders must remain agile, solution-oriented, and capable of adapting quickly to change.

Creativity and innovation are also increasingly important in today’s competitive landscape. Travellers are seeking more personalised and emotionally engaging experiences, which means hospitality brands must continuously evolve their storytelling, marketing strategies, and guest engagement approaches.

At the same time, strong analytical skills are essential. Sales and marketing today rely heavily on data, performance metrics, market intelligence, and digital insights. Balancing creativity with commercial discipline is key to achieving sustainable results.

Finally, passion remains one of the most important qualities of all. Hospitality is an industry built on creating memorable experiences and human connections. Genuine passion for people, travel, and service excellence is what ultimately drives long-term success.
