Maldives Sees Surge in Private Jet Arrivals This December, Reflecting Growing Luxury Appeal

The Maldives is seeing a significant uptick in private jet arrivals this December, continuing the annual trend of increased air traffic during the holiday season. This surge in travel has already led to a higher volume of jet movements at Velana International Airport, with more private jets expected to arrive as the New Year approaches.

This December, Velana International Airport recorded 148 private jet movements up until December 28, marking an 8% rise from the 137 movements during the same period last year, according to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Currently, more than 30 private jets are parked at Velana International Airport, with 68 parking spaces available across its north, east, and south terminals.

So far this year, the Maldives has recorded a total of 2,326 private jet movements, marking a significant increase from the 2,107 jet movements in 2023. This 10% increase reflects the country’s escalating appeal as a luxury destination and marks a significant step in its growth within the global luxury travel industry.

With the revised Departure Tax and Airport Development Fee now in effect as of December 1, 2024, private jet passengers departing from the Maldives will see an increase in fees from USD 120 to USD 480. This move is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to ensure its economic growth while continuing to attract international travellers.

In addition to the rise in private jet traffic, the Maldives’ luxury status is further strengthened by impressive tourism statistics. On December 26, the country reached a major milestone, welcoming its two millionth tourist of the year, highlighting the continuous growth of the Maldives tourism sector.
