Maldives Set to Unveil New Terminal at Velana International Airport by October

Velana International Airport (VIA), the Maldives’ main international gateway, is set to undergo a transformative upgrade with the inauguration of its new terminal, expected before October 2025. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced this during the opening of parliament on 6th February. The highly anticipated development is poised to revolutionise the travel experience for the millions of tourists visiting the Maldives annually. Designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers per year, the state-of-the-art terminal will alleviate congestion and enhance the overall passenger experience at one of the region’s busiest airport.

The expansion of VIA is crucial as the airport has been operating beyond its intended capacity for some time. The new terminal will provide much-needed relief, allowing for smoother arrivals and departures, which is essential for maintaining the Maldives’ status as a premier travel destination. This upgrade will further strengthen the country’s connectivity to global markets, ensuring seamless travel experiences for tourists from around the world.

In addition to the VIA expansion, the Maldives is also enhancing its aviation network with the development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Addu Gan Airport. The ongoing projects aim to make the Maldives even more accessible, with easier inter-island travel options for both tourists and locals.

As the country invests in modernising its aviation infrastructure, the Maldives is poised to offer travellers a seamless and luxurious experience, solidifying its position as a top-tier global tourism hub. With the new VIA terminal, alongside the continued expansion of domestic airports, the Maldives is ready to welcome even more visitors to its pristine islands, vibrant culture, and world-class hospitality.
