The Standard Maldives among CNN’s 20 best new hotels to visit in 2020

From underwater suites in the Great Barrier Reef to luxurious yet affordable hideaways in the heart of London, Brisbane or Cape Town, CNN picked 20 incredible new hotels to visit in 2020 and The Standard Maldives has landed a spot on it.

Officially opening its shores in November 2019, The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives marked the American brand’s first property in Asia. Traditionally seen as a couple’s destination, The Standard has taken a fresh approach to its island retreat, offering relaxation, social activities and vibrant cultural experiences that welcome not only couples but groups of friends and singles looking to reset and recharge in paradise.

Its 115 villas (several overwater) are a departure from the romantic, honeymoon vibes of many other Maldives resorts, instead going straight to the hearts of millennial travelers with their psychedelic decor (think disco balls in the bathroom) and neon-pink pool toys. Other highlights of the resort include nightly beach bonfires, drum circles, karaoke and a glass-floored overwater night club that stays open until after sunrise.

The Standard Maldives is nestled between the Raa and Baa Atolls, on a naturally protected island. Guests can also take a combined 20-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a 35-minute speedboat ride to the resort.
