Thoriq Ibrahim Appointed as Minister of Tourism and Environment

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Thoriq Ibrahim as the new Minister of the newly merged Ministry of Tourism and Environment. The appointment ceremony took place on 1 February 2025 at the President’s Office.

In a subsequent meeting, President Muizzu emphasised the strategic importance of promoting the Maldives through an integrated approach that highlights the synergy between the nation’s environmental heritage and its tourism sector.

Minister Thoriq is now tasked with leading the country’s tourism efforts, focusing on sustainable development and reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a world-class destination.

Minister Thoriq holds a BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering from Loughborough University (UK), an MSc in Building Science from the National University of Singapore, and an MBA from Preston University (USA).

His professional expertise extends beyond engineering into governance, having served on the boards of several key institutions in the Maldives. These include the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), the Maldives Energy Authority, and the Maldives Qualifications Authority.

Minister Thoriq also held the position of Minister of Environment and Energy in the Maldives from 19 November 2013 to 17 November 2018.
